Lady Bird stars on the future of female-led projects in Hollywood

On the heels (or should we say wings?) of Lady Bird’s critical acclaim and five Oscar nominations, the film’s leading ladies hope the future will be bright for other female-fronted projects in Hollywood.

Writer-director Greta Gerwig and stars Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf sat down with Entertainment Weekly for our latest cover story, amid an awards season dominated by discussion of #MeToo and the Time’s Up initiative.

“I have to say, it was really cool to be on that red carpet at the Golden Globes and to feel that support, at least within the industry, and to feel the momentum behind it,” Metcalf said. “If that germ can spread cross-country into other industries and workplaces….”

Gerwig pointed to the box office-busting Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, as one of the ways things will start to change for the better. “I’m hopeful,” she says. “That movie is amazing — and also, it was so successful. I think when it comes down to it, it’s a business — the success is not because she’s a woman but that she made a really great movie that people really responded to. In the past, like with Bridemaids, people were like, Who knew? It felt like every year there’d be a successful movie fronted by a bunch of women and it was a surprise! Now it’s consistently happening and it’s like, No, it’s not wacky. It’s good business.”

Gerwig went on to add that she was excited for a time when movies such as Bridesmaids wouldn’t just be contextualized as a male story first. “Like, “It’s ‘the female Hangover!’” or “It’s ‘the female Superbad.’” It doesn’t have to be the counterpart of the thing, it can just be the thing,” she says.
