Chris Hemsworth fights terrorists on horseback in new 12 Strong trailer

Posted on

Believe it or not, Peter Berg (the guy behind Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon) had nothing to do with this latest January-timed war movie.

Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Ragnarok) and a few other names from superhero movies past and present — Michael Pena (Ant-Man), Michael Shannon (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), and Jack Kesy (Deadpool 2) — make up “the horse soldiers” in the new trailer for 12 Strong, directed by Nicolai Fuglsig.

The film adapts the Doug Stanton book Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan, about the U.S. Special Forces team chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for a dangerous mission in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attack. Forced to leave their families behind, they were dubbed “the horse soldiers” for adopting the tactics of the Afghani horse soldiers as they attempt to convince Northern Alliance General Dostum to join their fight against Al Qaeda.

12 Strong is slated for release this Jan. 19, following in the recent tradition of military-themed movies dropping in this release window. Zero Dark Thirty opened in December 2012 before going wider in January 2013, and the trend continued with Lone Survivor in December 2013-January 2014, American Sniper in December 2014-January 2015, and 13 Hours in January 2016.

Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Austin Stowell (Battle of the Sexes), Ben O’Toole (Hacksaw Ridge), Geoff Stults (Only the Brave), Thad Luckinbill (Only the Brave), Austin Hebert (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back), Kenneth Miller (Whiskey Tango Foxtrot), Kenny Sheard (13 Hours), and Rob Riggle (The Hangover) also feature.
