First listen: Hear a track from Danny Elfman's Justice League score

Posted on

For decades, the Justice League have dominated the pages of DC comic books as the ultimate example of heroism and teamwork. Next month, the heroes finally make their debut together on the big screen in the much-anticipated Justice League film. One thing they’ll have to learn, however, is that there’s a big difference between being a comic superhero and a movie superhero. For the latter, you need your own rousing theme music. Luckily for the Justice League, Danny Elfman is here to help, and EW has the exclusive first preview of his score.

“Hero’s Theme” is the third track off Elfman’s score for the new superhero ensemble film, and it certainly lives up to its title. Its propulsive beat feels like it could make a great companion to scenes of heroes taking down bad guys and saving the world.

EW also has the full Justice League soundtrack tracklist, which in addition to Elfman’s score also contains The White Stripes’ “Icky Thump,” Sigrid’s “Everybody Knows,” and a cover of The Beatles’ “Come Together” by Gary Clark Jr. and Junkie XL. As usual, such a tracklist contains some tantalizing hints for the movie’s plot. “Amazon Mother Box,” for instance, could indicate a connection between Wonder Woman’s backstory and the technology of Apokolips, the hellish planet from which the villainous Steppenwolf hails. In Jack Kirby’s Fourth World mythology, the Mother Box is a powerful piece of technology that provides empathy and emotion alongside utility — think of it like an iPod made by gods that can also comfort your soul. Eagle-eyed viewers of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will also have spotted a Mother Box in the background of Cyborg’s cameo, suggesting that same technology is behind his new superpowers.

The Justice League soundtrack will be released digitally Nov. 10, ahead of the film’s Nov. 17 release. A two-CD edition will follow on Dec. 8, and a vinyl edition will be available Feb. 9, 2018. Check out the full tracklist below, and listen to “Hero’s Theme” above.
