Felicity Jones is going rogue as Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Production has begun on On the Basis of Sex, and we now have our first glimpse of Jones as the Notorious RBG.
It was first reported back in July that Jones would replace Natalie Portman in the biopic that follows Ginsburg as a young lawyer who brings a gender discrimination case before the Supreme Court and scores a major victory towards equality of the sexes. Armie Hammer is also already set to star as Ginsburg’s husband, Martin, her legal partner on the case. (See a real photo of the young Ginsburg below.)
The first look at Jones as Ginsburg comes alongside news of further additions to the cast. Justin Theroux (The Girl on the Train, The Leftovers), Oscar winner Kathy Bates, Sam Waterston (Law & Order), Jack Reynor (Detroit), Stephen Root (Get Out, All the Way), and Cailee Spaeny (the upcoming Pacific Rim: Uprising) have all joined the project.
Premiering in 2018 to coincide with Justice Ginsburg’s 25th year on the Supreme Court, the film is from a script penned by Ginsburg’s nephew, Daniel Stiepleman, and is directed by Mimi Leder.
“Our story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg resonates with me on so many levels – from the inspiring partnership she found in her marriage, to overcoming adversity as a woman and discovering the strength of her own voice, to her empathetic commitment to those in need of a voice no matter their gender, race, status or religious beliefs,” said Leder in a statement. “In these tumultuous times, stories like this speak to the heart of humanity and remind us what it means to lead with love and compassion as the way forward.”
