Riz Ahmed could be headed to Sony’s Marvel Universe based on Spider-Man and his web of related characters.
The Rogue One and The Night Of star is in early talks to play an undisclosed but popular Marvel character in Venom, EW has confirmed.
If a deal is reached, Ahmed would join a cast headlined by Tom Hardy as Venom, who in comics lore is granted Spider-Man-like abilities by a symbiotic alien creature. Venom, a.k.a. Eddie Brock, has been portrayed as both a villain and an antihero over the years.
Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) is on board to direct the film, which is intended to launch a franchise of Spidey-adjacent movies. Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Silver and Black is another such project.
Ahmed has established himself as a rising star in recent years, with credits including Nightcrawler, Jason Bourne, Girls, and The O.A. He’s also a member of the rap group Swet Shop Boys.
Venom is slated to hit theaters Oct. 5, 2018.
