It’s not the story of a man surviving the prehistoric Ice Age on his own, but rather his unbreakable bond with a lone wolf that gets to the heart of the new Alpha trailer.

In this preview for the film, set 20,000 years ago, Kodi Smit-McPhee plays Keda, a young man who’s injured and left for dead by his tribe when he goes out on his first hunt. With his leg broken, he’s forced to learn how to survive the harsh terrain — and he does so, in part, through the friendship formed with a wolf, Alpha, he nurses back to health. Together they overcome impossible odds as they try to find their way home.

It’s too early to know whether this will be a tearjerking tale for the ages, but that scene where Keda and Alpha cuddle in the cold is already doing the trick.

The trailer for Alpha, directed by Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli), also sees Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (one of The Hound’s least favorite pals on Game of Thrones) as Keda’s father. Natassia Malthe, Leonor Varela, Mercedes de la Zerda, and Jens Hultén also star.

Alpha hits theaters on March 2, 2018. Watch the trailer above.
