Thor: Ragnarok Funko figures reveal another villain

Meet the fire demon Surtur.

Posted on

Cate Blanchett will emerge from the darkness as Hela, the goddess of Death, in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, but Marvelites at San Diego Comic-Con in 2016 got a sneak peek at some of the other figures popping up in the film. Thanks to the new line of Funko Pop! figures pegged to Chris Hemsworth’s latest on-screen adventure, the rest of us can get a feel for one of them: the fire demon Surtur.

Wreathed in flame, Surtur wields a sword of fire as one of the most dangerous elemental beings Asgard has ever faced. He even played a part in the Ragnarok comic book arc, from which the film takes inspiration. In the first scene from the Thor: Ragnarok trailer, Thor dangles from a long chain above a fiery pit. Perhaps this is where Surtur encounters the viking Avenger.

It’s unclear how much a presence Surtur will play in Thor: Ragnarok, especially since Hela will be a particularly nasty thorn in everyone’s side. Plus, there’s the whole situation with Hulk fighting in the gladiator trenches of Sakaar under the eye of Jeff Goldblum’s The Grandmaster.

Other familiar faces in the Funko line include Thor with a blaster instead of a hammer (because his got smashed to bits), Hela in and out of her horned helmet, Heimdall (Idris Elba), casual Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Hulk in gladiator armor, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and Loki (Tom Hiddleston).
