The “gurus” at Joe Dante’s website Trailers From Hell often ruminate over the trailers for bona fide film classics like Alien, Bullitt, or The Exorcist. But sometimes they tackle a movie whose qualities are, let us say, of a less classically “good” nature. Take, for example, the site’s most recent choice, the 1984 martial arts sequel, Ninja III: The Domination.

“Now that is a symbol of quality,” dclares guru and Oscar-nominated screenwriter Josh Olson (A History of Violence) as the Cannon Films logo turns up onscreen at the start of the trailer. “Perhaps I should say, a symbol of a quality. And that quality is cheese, baby! Cannon Films were the masters of ’80s cheese. They were also the masters of ninjas. Here are some of the ninja movies the made: Enter the Ninja, Revenge of the Ninja, American Ninja, American Ninja 2: The Confrontation, American Ninja 3: Blood Hunt, American Ninja 4: Annihilation, and American Ninja 5, which had no subtitle. We assume the ninjas stole it.”

You can hear Olson’s full commentary for the  Ninja III: The Domination promo — which kicks off a week of commentaries for martial arts movie trailers — above.
