In the first Megan Leavey trailer, released Wednesday by distributor Bleecker Street, Kate Mara stars as the real-life Iraq War hero of the same name who fought through political red tape in order to adopt Sergeant Rex, her bomb-sniffing canine companion in the marines.
The footage previews Leavey’s enlistment in the marines through boot camp before she’s partnered with an aggressive dog after a disciplinary hearing. Animal and handler end up forming a bond that leads to successful completion of more than 100 missions — until an explosion in the field leaves them both injured. Back home, Megan fights to get Rex discharged into her care. (If you care for potential spoilers on how the true story ended, check out the Associated Press’ coverage of Leavey, via NBC New York.)
Sergeant Mike Dowling previously wrote a book about the dog called Sergeant Rex: The Unbreakable Bond Between a Marine and His Military Working Dog.
Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish) directs Megan Leavey, which also stars Common, Edie Falco, Ramón Rodríguez, and Bradley Whitford. The film arrives in theaters June 9. Watch the trailer above.
This article was updated to clarify Dowling’s book was not used as source material for the film.
