On Aug. 3, 2001, an awkward 15-year-old found out she was a princess, and goofy teenage girls everywhere dreamed of discovering that they too had estranged relatives who ruled over obscure European countries.

Anne Hathaway made her film debut (and got her breakthrough role) as Mia Thermopolis, Princess of Genovia, and Julie Andrews played Mia’s elegant grandmother, the Queen, in the Garry Marshall film, based on Meg Cabot’s book series of the same name.
