Dominic Toretto will live forever … or at least for three more movies. What Diesel has called the Fast and Furious franchise’s final trilogy will kick off with the officially titled The Fate of the Furious. And now that the film is almost here, the news keeps coming, so we’ve put it all in one place. Here’s everything you need to know about The Fate of the Furious:
Fast 8 is set to hit theaters April 14, 2017.
The core gang is back, including Vin Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Michelle Rodriguez, and Tyrese Gibson. But they aren’t the only familiar faces.
Thanks to Vin Diesel’s Instagram, we’ve learned that both Nathalie Emmanuel and Elsa Pataky will reprise their roles. For Emmanuel, that means the return of hacker Ramsey, and for Pataky, Elena is back! Jason Statham is also confirmed to be returning.
Kurt Russell is also set to return as Mr. Nobody. Get a glimpse at the cast below:
As for Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs, could he spend the movie behind bars? The actor shared a photo of his character in an orange jumpsuit and han cuffs. (We’re taking bets now on whether he’ll muscle his way out of those cuffs the same way he did that cast.)
First up, some changes behind the camera: Straight Outta Compton filmmaker F. Gary Gray is directing the film, his first in the franchise.
In the cast, Scott Eastwood and Charlize Theron are both joining the fun — though they won’t necessarily be playing characters you’ll love. (Or maybe you will.) Theron’s character, Cipher, is being pitched as the “greatest adversary ever” for Dom and the gang, while Eastwood is set to play the previously mentioned new protégé of Russell’s Mr. Nobody, which seemingly means he’s bad … but maybe less bad than Theron?
And if that’s not enough evil for you, Game of Thrones‘ Kristofer Hivju has also joined the cast as an “evil henchman.”
Get a first look at Theron’s character below:
However, perhaps the most exciting news to come out about the film so far is that Helen Mirren will appear! There’s no word yet on her role, but from what she told EW, it’s probably something fairly small. “I’ve only got one day, and I’ll probably f— it up, oh God,” she told EW, laughing.
Mirren then added, “I wanted to be driving, but unfortunately, I’m not. Maybe that will come in the future, in Fast and Furious 12.” And just in case you were wondering, yes, she does know how to handle a gear shift. “I’m probably one of the few people on the set who know how to drive a gear shift car. I doubt the Rock knows,” she said jokingly. “But I do. I know how to double declutch.”
Diesel later posted the first on-set photo of Helen Mirren to his Instagram:
As the first trailer revealed, Theron’s Cipher somehow gets Dom to turn on his family. Exactly how she does that is a mystery, but the trailer reveals that the central plot of the film is Dom’s family — working with none other than Shaw — trying to win him back from the new villain. For more, watch the trailer below:
A later trailer offered further insight into the Dom-Cipher alliance. According to Dom, he didn’t have a choice in the matter, so that begs the question: What is Cipher threatening Dom with? Another new reveal: Cipher tells Dom that she’s been watching him for a while now, both in London and Abu Dhabi, and according to Vin Diesel, Cipher first took notice of Letty when she signed up with Owen Shaw, so in many ways, Cipher’s journey started in London.
