Tom jumps for joy on Oprah
In April 2005, Cruise's relationship with Holmes went public. In May, he visited The Oprah Winfrey Show for the interview that launched a thousand viral videos. Why? Cruise expressed his unrestrained jubilation at finding such a wonderful woman by repeatedly Tebowing before Ms. O. and literally jumping for joy all over Oprah's couch.

A giggling girl in love
A month later, Holmes attended the 2005 MTV Movie Awards to present her beau with the Generation Award. In between allusions to his illustrious film career (''Can you handle the truth?''), she launched into proto-adorkable fits of laughter. After ending her spiel about ''the man who had us at 'hello,''' she dramatically bowed down, then pointed to her man.

Marriage, Italian style
The new parents made it official on Nov. 18, 2006. In a nod to their Italian courtship, the ceremony took place at Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano. Holmes dazzled in a Giorgio Armani dress, and many of Cruise's Scientology buddies, such as Jenna Elfman, attended; a Scientology leader, David Miscavige, served as Cruise's best man. Other A-listers on the 150-person guest list: Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Brooke Shields and Chris Henchy, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, and Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy. At the reception, Andrea Boccelli serenaded the newlyweds, and Mark Ronson DJ'ed.

Holmes certainly raised her profile during her marriage to Cruise, though she struggled to translate the exposure to a bona fide professional boost. She appeared in director Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins in 2005, but did not return for its sequel, The Dark Knight. Holmes headed for real-life Gotham and her Broadway debut in 2008. Reviews for All My Sons were mixed, and Holmes hasn't returned to the stage since.

As Holmes settled into the role of celebrity mommy, she and Cruise made a public display of recruiting celebrity friends. From Suri's playdate with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's daughter Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, to regular dinners with David and Victoria Beckham, and Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, the Cruises established themselves as part of a very elite group of Hollywood couples.

Suri rocks high heels, controversy ensues
As Suri toddled around town with Holmes, her fashion sense became the focal point of a heated debate. The mini-fashionista's whimsical wears were all well and good until she took to wearing kid-sized high heels here, there, and everywhere, sparking concerns that she might be negatively affecting her growth and development. Cruise later admitted to the press, ''Suri dresses herself and she was born that way.''

As one of the few remaining deal closers in Tinseltown, Cruise revived his Mission: Impossible franchise to critical and commercial success in late 2011, then played against his action star image by singing and shimmying through the May 2012 musical Rock of Ages. The happy couple seemed to be on top of the world and continued to entertain notions of another baby. A month later, they unexpectedly announced their plans to divorce.
