Snow (Abduction's Lily Collins) is a delicate? princess trying to overthrow her wicked stepmother with the aid of seven dwarfs, who bedevil the kingdom as woodland bandits. ''These guys have a height problem, so they wear stilts much of the time,'' director Tarsem Singh says. ''You have to make yourself look big when you're that small. When they have a fight, they're nine feet tall. When they come home, they go down into their tree and live small.''

The Queen is sporting a red peacock gown while attending the costume ball. The outfits in the movie were created by Oscar-winning costume designer Eiko Ishioka (Bram Stoker's Dracula). ''Eiko's stuff is notoriously non-practical, so I have to make sure that she understands that in these clothes the person has to move,'' Singh jokes. ''She will literally make clothes that are impossible for people to move in. We have to work out only the practical issues, and nothing else. Never the creative issues.''

A noble prince (The Social Network's Armie Hammer) attempts to thwart the bandits, searching not for dwarfs but giants. ''That's how they attack him,'' Singh says.

Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen
The main character in Relativity Media's fairy tale is Snow White, but the most anticipated element of the film has always been Julia Roberts' evil Queen. Behold the villainess, in all her wickedness! Singh notes that this enormous salmon-colored gown is casual wear compared with the Queen's other outfits. ''It took 14 people to help carry her wedding dress,'' he says. ''[Roberts] had to take three steps, and they were very difficult.

When Snow is exiled into the wilderness after the queen's majordomo, played by Nathan Lane, can't bring himself to kill her, the dwarfs take pity on a fellow outcast and offer their skills to help. ''They all train her in different things,'' says Tarsem, who notes that Collins may look delicate but can really take a hit. ''Surprisingly, from the first day she came in, she's very physical.''
