Dennis Quaid is bringing The Right Stuff to his first-ever audiobook.

The award-winning actor has returned to the world that he first entered into more than 30 years ago. Quaid starred in the epic film adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s best-selling nonfiction book back in 1983, and now, for his audiobook debut, he’s performing the original work exclusively for Audible. This is the first time that The Right Stuff has been made available in digital audio.

“Recording The Right Stuff for Audible — my very first audiobook recording — was both a familiar and entirely new thing for me,” Quaid said in a statement. “I enjoyed revisiting the story after my role in the film, but reading it aloud by myself in a studio without the aid of costumes, props, or other actors to play off of was different than anything I had ever done before. It was a fun and challenging experience, and I think listeners will enjoy my interpretation.”

The Right Stuff explores the minds and courageous spirits of the first American astronauts to conquer space, with Wolfe channeling the inner life of the astronauts with almost uncanny, empathetic powers that have generated critical acclaim since the book’s 1979 release. Wolfe won the National Book Award for Nonfiction for the book, which was eventually adapted into a three-plus-hour film that featured a very young Quaid opposite Ed Harris, Sam Shepard, and Scott Glenn. It went on to win four Oscars.

Below, you can listen to an exclusive excerpt of the new audiobook performed by Quaid, as well as see the flashy new cover from Audible. The Right Stuff is available for purchase via Audible here.
