The Dark Knight has never been far from the world of film noir. In essence, he’s just another private eye fighting crime and following a shadowy moral compass — though he has a few more gadgets and a lot more wealth at his disposal.
In the new comic book Batman in Noir Alley, born from a partnership between DC Entertainment and Turner Classic Movies, Gotham’s masked hero is getting a full noir makeover.
The free comic marks an extension of TCM’s popular Sunday morning franchise Noir Alley, which sees Film Noir Foundation president and founder Eddie Muller introducing a noir movie for you to enjoy with your (hardboiled) eggs.
Known as the “Czar of Noir,” Muller in turn gets drawn into Batman in Noir Alley, partnering with the Caped Crusader to solve a crime on the streets of Gotham. The two team up to crack the case of a famed artifact, the Moroccan Raptor, that suddenly disappears from the Gotham City Museum.
Available in select comic book stores beginning today, Batman in Noir Alley will also be featured at the DC booth at New York Comic Con in October.
TCM’s partnership with DC is just one part of the network’s extension of the Noir Alley franchise. Later in October, TCM will launch Noir Alley: 360° of Noir, a virtual experience allowing fans to don their own trench coat and fedora for some old-fashioned sleuthing. Designed for desktop and VR devices with 360 technology, it will immerse players in a seven-episode online tale of kidnapping and murder as they hunt for clues, meet shady figures, and try to bring a killer to justice.
