Hank Green is following in the footsteps of his older brother, John. The popular YouTuber and younger half of the “Vlog Brothers” announced his first novel today, with a very Green-ian title to boot: An Absolutely Remarkable Thing will be published in fall 2018, after being acquired by Dutton in a two-book deal, according to a release from the publisher.
Hank, the co-creator of VidCon and the educational YouTube channels SciShow and Crash Course, founded Vlog Brothers in 2007 with John, the best-selling author of Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars, and most recently Turtles All the Way Down. The pair have expanded their video empire since then into 16 shows and millions of subscribers.
Unlike John’s books, however, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing is written for adults, featuring strong language and mature themes like social media fame, “idolation,” and “radicalization.” The book centers on a New York City art student (cutely named April May) who is thrust into fame when she makes a video with a mysterious robot statue. She soon finds that more statues like it are popping all over the world, and is set on a journey to find out why.
“We’re at a really weird moment in history, and April’s story helps highlight several of those oddities that we’re now seeing as more and more normal,” Hank Green says of the book. “It’s a story I’ve wanted to tell for a long time that was seeded by a lot of my personal experiences, but it’s April’s story, and it’s been a pleasure watching her live her absolutely remarkable life.”
