Twitter goes wild for Harry Potter’s 20th anniversary

Posted on

There’s no better place to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone than the closest social gathering place we have that resembles the Leaky Cauldron (or at least, an Owl Post filled entirely with Errols): Twitter!

The social media site is going big for the 20th anniversary with an exclusive emoji that will commemorate the anniversary as well as a cauldron-load of data about how Harry has fared online. Twitter teamed with Pottermore and Bloomsbury to create the event’s official emoji, which you can summon with the hashtag #HarryPotter20 for this dapper minimalist result:

The real juice is buried in the implications of the data-driven lists that reflect what the Harry Potter experience has been like on Twitter (aside from J.K. Rowling’s now-simmered trend of revealing things about tertiary characters at Hogwarts — like, congrats on your peanut allergy, Ernie Macmillan). According to Twitter’s data masters, here are a variety of intriguing points about how the famous Boy Who Lived became the Boy Who Was Subtweeted.

The six most-used emoji in Harry Potter-related tweets:

  1. Glasses
  2. Open book
  3. Crystal ball (Who is using a crystal ball to discuss Harry Potter?! Is Lavender Brown alive?!)
  4. Snake (Buy 1989 on iTunes)
  5. Beer (Likely re: butter)
  6. Lightning bolt (Sixth! How is the lightning bolt sixth?!)

The books, as organized by most tweets:

  1. Deathly Hallows
  2. Chamber of Secrets
  3. Philosopher’s Stone
  4. Goblet of Fire
  5. Order of the Phoenix (BONUS POINTS IF THE TWEETS WERE IN ALL CAPS)
  6. Half-Blood Prince
  7. Prisoner of Azkaban

The most-discussed Hogwarts houses:

  1. Slytherin (4.9 million tweets)
  2. Gryffindor (4.6 million tweets)
  3. Hufflepuff (2.8 million tweets)
  4. Ravenclaw (2.4 million tweets, lol)

The most-tweeted characters:

  1. Harry Potter
  2. Severus Snape (not redeemed, don’t @ me)
  3. Lord Voldemort
  4. Hermione Granger
  5. Professor Dumbledore
  6. Dobby (whatever)
  7. Draco Malfoy
  8. Ron Weasley

The most-discussed spells:

  1. Avada Kedavra (You sick f—s)
  2. Accio (You lazy f—s)
  3. Leviosa (But… not Wingardium?)
  4. Expecto Patronum
  5. Lumos
  6. Expelliarmus
  7. Silencio

And, rounding out the list of data, Twitter gathered the 10 most retweeted J.K. Rowling tweets. The all-time biggest…

Happy anniversary!
