Josie and the Pussycats Vol. 1: Read how the band got together

Fans of Riverdale may have been meeting Josie and the Pussycats for the first time, but the all-girl band had long since made it, having been the stars of their own comic, feature film, and animated TV show over the last few decades. And now Josie, Valerie, and Melody have returned to their comic book roots.

Josie and the Pussycats Vol. 1 kicks off the trio’s journey to stardom, as they form a band — which you can read exclusively below — and attempt to make music while dealing with the scheming machinations of Josie’s best-friend-turned-enemy Alexandra Cabot.

“This first collection deals with ambition, trying to make your way as an artist, struggling with jealousy, burnout, love, and crushes (and the occasional international diamond heist or endangered animal smuggling ring), and learning to be a better friend, artist, and person in spite — and because of — the over-the-top misadventures along the way,” explains Marguerite Bennett (DC Comics’ Bombshells) who co-writes the series with Cameron DeOrdio. “This series has been one of the most hilarious comics I’ve ever worked on. Zany, funny, and still sincerely emotional, Josie, Melody, and Valerie are heroines who don’t have to be aspirational to still be delightful, compelling and human.”

Adds DeOrdio, “Working on Josie and the Pussycats has been an absolute blast. Our book is about funny, close friends who grow and learn together, [so] it’s really helped to co-write it with a funny, close friend with whom I’ve grown and learned. It also helps quite a bit that everyone on the art team is a phenomenal talent. Every time we get new pages in, I can’t wait to open them, but I always save it for until I’m on my computer at home, so I can really take them in high-resolution. They’re just that good and so great to work with, to boot. I can’t imagine a better artistic fit for this book than Audrey [Mok]. Her expressive characters with pitch-perfect fashion blow us away every panel.”
