David S. Pumpkins fans were left with one big question following the character’s viral Saturday Night Live sketch last month: What does the “S” stand for?
Now, SNL cast member and sketch participant Bobby Moynihan has revealed Pumpkins’ mysterious middle name.
Speaking with The Huffington Post, Moynihan, who co-wrote the sketch and played one of Pumpkins’ dancing skeletons, disclosed Pumpkins’ middle name is Simon.
“David Simon Pumpkins,” said Moynihan, adding that the answer had been there all along, but no one had asked. “Me and Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell were trying to write something together. We like working together. Me and Mikey just wanted to do some weird dancing thing, and it was a lot of weird ideas, and around 5 o’clock in the morning, Mikey just went, ‘What if he was David Pumpkins?’ And then I said, ‘What if it was David S. Pumpkins?'”
Though Simon seems like a big reveal, Moynihan said the name, like the sketch itself, really doesn’t mean all that much.
“[It’s Simon] for no reason whatsoever,” he said. “It was a lot of the idea of just, ‘Why is this person here?’ Because he is. And we just thought that was funny.”
And for those wondering whether David S. Pumpkins might just turn into David S. Snowmans come winter time, Moynihan says Pumpkins will just do “his own thing,” whatever that entails.
