Years before writer-director James Gunn earned international recognition with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (soon to be followed by Vol. 2), he wrote a script for a horror-thriller called The Belko Experiment. After making its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the trailer will be now be released later this week, but Gunn has already shared the first footage in the form of a brief teaser.
As Gunn described in a Facebook message from back when it was Belco with a “c,” The Belko Experiment brings The Hunger Games to an office setting: “The story revolves around the American Belco company in South America which is mysteriously sealed off at the beginning of a work day, and its employees are ordered to kill each other or be killed themselves. This starts an escalation of violence, where we discover the true nature of each and every Belco employee.”
Watch the first bits of footage, featuring cast members Tony Goldwyn, Guardians alums Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn, Adria Arjona, John Gallagher Jr., John C. McGinley, David Dastmalchian, and Melonie Diaz.
Greg McLean (Wolf Creek) directs the film, which he described to EW as “a wild, wild movie” with “an incredibly crazy script.”
“I’m so glad I got to direct it,” he said. “James was great. We have a similar sensibility over the movies we like and the references we like. So, we clicked over those things. I think he’s a great writer, but he was great fun to work with, and really respectful of me taking over the project, and directing it.”
The Belko Experiment is scheduled for release on March 17, 2017.
