She was going through a high-profile divorce — just as she was getting ready to promote a major movie. Fortunately, Nicole Kidman had director Baz Luhrmann in her corner.
Speaking on The Jess Cagle Interview, Kidman opened up to PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly‘s editorial director about going through her divorce from Tom Cruise while also having to promote her award-winning 2001 musical Moulin Rouge. Kidman recalls how Luhrmann’s encouragement and advice changed her perspective about having to be in the public eye during such an emotional time.
“We put a lot into [Moulin Rouge] so there was no choice there,” she says about taking on her promotional duties while also being under the media spotlight for her divorce from Cruise. “I’m so glad I did. At the same time, pushing through that stuff, I think, it’s a great thing to do. I think people that have gone through things a lot of the times will tell you, just [take it] day by day, right? You push through it.”
Kidman, who went on to win a Golden Globe award and received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her performance in Moulin Rouge, says she learned a lot from Luhrmann and the entire team that supported her at that time.
“Thank God for Baz and all of Fox, actually, at that time,” says the Lion actress. “Everyone was so good to me. It was like, ‘Come on. Off we go. Onward.’ It was a really good approach. It’s a great life lesson. ‘Onward.’ ”
