How did some of Earth’s inhabitants come to be? Saturday Night Live credits the “Goddesses of Creation.”
A cut sketch from last week’s episode features host Kristen Wiig, and cast members Kate McKinnon, and Vanessa Bayer as the titular all-powerful beings. The trio lobs ideas at a omniscient, powerful crystal (voiced by Cecily Strong) that approves or denies the requests. Bayer snuck in a brown bear; McKinnon’s sales pitch of a “hoorse” — an elongated horse — was shut down; Wiig, as Hindra, sheepishly went bold: a flamingo.
“I was so sleepy when I made it. The colors are insane,” she admits. “It has two legs, but I thought it’d be cool if he just always hid one of them.”
That pleased the crystal, but not Bayer and McKinnon’s deities. “So we’re just going forward with millions of those?” Bayer asks. McKinnon digs deeper into the decision-making process: “Who’s the audience, you know?”
The crystal went on to clear Hindra’s other ideas, such as a clam (“a little nugget of slime that lives inside a hard coin purse”); peacocks; jellyfish; volcanoes; and the concept of music. Hindra’s contributions to humanity will never be forgotten. She’s likely responsible for the platypus, too.
