Every week, the cast and crew of FXX’s sharp, raunchy, cult comedy, You’re the Worst, is taking EW behind the scenes. For each episode, one member is recapping, sharing thoughts on what went down, and walking us through the ins-and-outs of the show. This week, writer Eva Anderson brings us into the 12th episode of season 3, “You Knew It Was a Snake.”

Hey, everyone! I’m writer Eva Anderson, here to recap episode 12 of You’re the Worst, “You Knew It Was a Snake.” Let’s do this!

The gang is reeling from S-Stain’s catastrophic wedding. Dorothy stormed out after humiliating herself in front of Brian Posehn, Lindsay finally told Paul about the abortion, and Jimmy and Gretchen forced each other to say the unthinkable.

So, Jimmy wakes Gretchen up by aggressively reading excerpts from The Width of a Peach, his masterpiece of multigenerational erotica. He’s furious at her for saying he might never be successful and stayed up all night hate-writing just to spite her. She’s equally furious at him for saying he can’t see having kids with her. Also, Lindsay’s there, fully nude.

Downstairs, Dorothy shows up with Mexican pastries and a whole lot of excuses. Before long, she’s revealed that she thinks Edgar may have only gotten his writing job for reasons of diversity, which makes an already testy Edgar very, very angry. And Paul shows up, full of beans, trying to force Lindsay to answer for aborting their baby without his knowledge. Lindsay’s not having it. “My body, my choice.”

In the midst of this massive, house-wide fight, Dorothy confesses that she’s in a much worse place than Edgar ever imagined, both career-wise and life-trajectory-wise, and Lindsay forces Paul to admit that he’s kept himself willfully blind to her personality. Jimmy realizes that his novel is, at its core, all about his feelings about their relationship. In the end, our heroes are together, but in the words of Gretch, “We didn’t solve anything.”

Some additional thoughts…

•    When we started writing this season, Stephen Falk had a vision of an episode-long fight. At first we just thought Jimmy and Gretchen would be coming to fisticuffs, but as we figured out the structure of the season, it became clear that all of the couples should be fighting each other, all at once, in the same house.

•    “You knew it was a snake when you picked it up,” is something a friend of mine used to say whenever I went out with a guy who I knew was a jerk, and then acted shocked by his jerkiness. It’s also similar to a poem that Donald Trump used to read on the campaign trail. Sorry, America!

•    Poor, cuckolded Paul. I think Allan McLeod’s slow-motion meltdown in this episode is absolutely heartbreaking.

•    And poor, poor baby Tallulah. Her parents are Becca and Vernon. That kid’s gonna have a rough ride.

You’re the Worst airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FXX.
