Fifteen years ago Wednesday, on November 16, 2001, Harry Potter fans first caught Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley on the big screen. Brought to life by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, respectively, the trio of young wizards found their way to theaters worldwide just a few years after the debut of J. K. Rowling’s runaway hit debut novel.
Directed by Chris Columbus, the Warner Bros. production was a huge success, earning more than $974.7 million at the worldwide box office, and picking up Academy Award nominations for Best Art Direction — Set Decoration, Best Costume Design, and Best Music — Original Score. While Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was followed by seven film adaptations of Rowling’s wizarding novels, it holds a special place in many Muggles’ hearts as the first foray into the magical world.
