Lin-Manuel Miranda already conquered the retelling of Alexander Hamilton’s life, and now he’s taking on the von Trapp’s with a little help from his own family.
Miranda made his first appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Friday, showing off his signature improvisational rap skills, and sharing a home movie made during a trip to Austria. Miranda, along with wife Vanessa, son Sebastian, and 13 additional family members, made an epic tribute to The Sound of Music, taking on the von Trapp dynamic — plus a few more.
The Hamilton creator’s father, Luis A. Miranda, Jr., took on the iconic role of Maria von Trapp for the group, guiding them through the classic song “Do Re Mi.” Just like the film, the group learns the fundamentals of songwriting while exploring the beautiful Austrian countryside — even jumping up and down staircases in sync with the music.
Once the family knew “the notes to sing,” they frolicked through the gardens, recreating Julie Andrews choreography from the original film. Of course, it all had to end with a bang, which the whole family honored by circling a fountain.
Watch the epic recreation above. And remember, this is not the first time the Miranda family recreated a scene from a famous musical. Both Miranda men, and many others, performed a scene from Fiddler on the Roof during Lin-Manuel and Vanessa’s wedding. You can relive that 2010 viral video below.
