Teen Jeopardy!: Alex Trebek, Sabrina recreate What Are Those meme

Posted on

If you can’t beat ’em…meme ’em?

Sabrina, a contestant on Thursday’s Jeopardy! Teen Tournament, was stumped by the Final Jeopardy clue, and decided to have a little fun with her answer.

The clue: “Roughly half the size of Texas, it’s the largest structure made by living creatures and can even be seen from space.” Sabrina didn’t know the correct answer of Great Barrier Reef, so she wrote the next best thing: “What are…those?” a reference to a popular meme.

The joke was a hit with her fellow contestants, but host Alex Trebek was not amused.

“That’s not going to work,” he replied to her answer, as she grinned and posed, knowing that she’d just gained a legion of cool and hip teenage fans.

The meme originated sometime in 2015, when a video of a teenager pointing to a police officer’s black boots and yelling, “What are those?” went viral. The internet quickly exploded with videos of people shouting, ‘What are those?” and pointing to unstylish footwear.

Sabrina, who was in third place before Final Jeopardy, ended up with $45. Emily pulled out the win, but she won’t go down as the legend who got Trebek to say “What are those?” so you can decide who’s the real winner here.
