As the 2016 presidential election finally hits the home stretch, some GOP lawmakers are already making plans for what to do if Hillary Clinton wins. Former Congressman Joe Walsh, for one, infamously tweeted that if Donald Trump loses the election, “I’m grabbing my musket. You in?”
Walsh’s comment was all bluster, as Seth Meyers examined on Thursday night. Defending his comment on MSNBC, Walsh contended that muskets are rare and challenged his interviewer to find one. “Why does he have to find you a musket? This isn’t a scavenger hunt,” Meyers said. “‘And once you find the musket, you have to find an autographed photo of Luke Perry.'”
Perhaps more importantly, sitting GOP politicians like Sen. Ted Cruz are saying they will refuse to confirm any Supreme Court nominee from Clinton. They had previously refused to meet with President Barack Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, until the election, and now seem committed to continuing that stance.
“Poor Merrick Garland! Do you remember him? The guy Obama nominated to fill the seat eight months ago? He’s probably wandering around the halls of Congress like Tom Hanks in The Terminal,” Meyers said. “The hypocrisy here is especially brazen when you consider Republicans’ excuse for not confirming Garland in the first place was that we should wait for the election, and let the voters decide who they want to fill in the seat.”
