The Blacklist spin-off, Blacklist: Redemption, is edging closer to reality.
Last season, The Blacklist introduced the woman whom Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) believes to be is his mother, Susan “Scottie” Hargrave (Famke Janssen), the leader of a black ops-type organization that’s a contemporary to the FBI’s Post Office, except they have no rules. (The question of paternity will be answered “incredibly quickly” once the spin-off launches.)
During Thursday’s episode, Tom implored Liz to walk away from Kirk, revealing that he met his own mother while Liz was in Cuba. But he decided to let his questions go unanswered, because Scottie has nothing to do with who he is or who he’s become, and the same can be said about Kirk for Liz.
Though Tom says Liz is his future, she has other plans in mind, agreeing to donate her marrow to keep Kirk alive — well, until she discovers she may not actually be Kirk’s daughter. Is this the first domino in their differing views on how to handle their respective parental situations that will lead Tom to leave for the midseason spin-off?
“It is the first hint at a conversation that is going to become more in-depth as we get closer to Redemption,” executive producer John Eisendrath tells EW. “They’re conversations on whether to leave your children. We’re dealing with parental issues — as an adult, do you dive into those, do you avoid them? That will very much be on their minds as we get closer to Redemption.”
What does this mean for Liz and Tom’s relationship moving forward? “For the first time in a long time, Liz and Tom are going to have the opportunity to have a family, have the family that Liz has always wanted,” Eisendrath says. “They will face up to whether or not that is satisfying enough. This the life that they’ve always dreamed of, and is that going to sustain them when there are all these other questions, particularly for Tom, that remain unanswered? Liz is entering a phase of her life where she has a lot of the questions she’s longed for answered; Tom less so. So is that imbalance going to affect their relationship?”
The Blacklist airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
