Jeopardy: EW is Wednesday's Final Jeopardy clue

Posted on

Did you catch EW on the most recent episode of Jeopardy?

On Wednesday, the Final Jeopardy! clue was about EW’s 50 Greatest Movie Directors, which tested the contestants’ knowledge of a list we published two decades ago. Here’s the clue: “He ‘inaugurated a new depth—both visually…and emotionally…and [had] a voice that paid the bills until the end.”

Take your time — well, 30 seconds, really — to guess the answer before scrolling below.

Dennis Fipps, the first contestant, incorrectly guessed Frank Capra, who directed It’s A Wonderful Life. Courtney Cissel picked David O. Selznick, which was also wrong. Thankfully, returning champion Vivek Ravishanker from Higganum, Conn., was familiar with his EW (or film) history and guessed the right answer, bringing his two-day total to $43,200.

The answer: Who is Orson Welles (Citizen Kane)?

EW originally published its 50 Greatest Movie Directors list in 1996. Alfred Hitchcock came in first place, followed by Welles. Be sure to check out the rest of the list here.
