Tina Fey came to Jimmy Fallon’s defense on Saturday when she commented on the late-night host’s controversial Tonight Show interview with Donald Trump.
“This election is so, so ugly, it’s not business as usual. I really felt for Jimmy when people were so angry,” she said (via The Hollywood Reporter) of her former Saturday Night Live castmate during the Produced By: New York conference in the Big Apple. “It’s not Jimmy who peed in that punch bowl, it’s not Jimmy who created this horrible world that we’re currently living in.”
In September, Fallon hosted the Republican nominee on The Tonight Show, after which he received a lot of flack for not addressing the issues or Trump’s volatile rhetoric. Fallon addressed the criticism at the time by saying, “Have you seen my show?” and Fey later mocked Fallon for the interview during their joint appearance on SNL.
Fey added during the conference this weekend that people are probably experiencing “election-related weight gain,” due to the stressful political climate. “I feel like that’s gonna be a thing: ‘I gained eight pounds between the two debates,” she said.
The comedian also defended SNL, which Trump accused of participating in the media’s skewed portrayal of him. “We spent so much time and care on making sure everything, we felt, was a fair hit,” she said (via The Wrap) of her time on the sketch comedy series. “We never, ever went into it being like, ‘We gotta protect Obama, we gotta make [Republicans] look bad.'”
She added, “If it doesn’t ring true of people, it’s not going to be funny.”
