UPDATE: On Facebook, James Gunn commented on directing Stan Lee’s Marvel cameos, calling it “one of the most fun times I’ve ever had on set.”

“There are few people in this world I love and admire more and have more fun with than Stan Lee,” Gunn wrote. “Even though he does love breaking my, and everyone else’s balls (I introduced him to Tom Holland for the first time and he said, ‘Everyone says you’re great! Personally, I don’t see it.’).”

While Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson said Gunn had directed the next four Lee cameos, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director wasn’t so sure.

“To be honest, I think I only did THREE cameos — one was shot by someone else,” Gunn wrote. “And my third probably isn’t what you think it is…”

Of Doctor Strange, Gunn teased that it was “one of MANY versions I shot on the day, and Scott Derrickson chose the final one.”

“If I’m writing for Stan, why give him one line when I can give him a thousand? I just kept throwing lines at him one after the other, until we were all doubled over with laughter,” Gunn wrote. “Someday, after you’ve seen the movie, maybe Marvel Studios will let me share some of those with you.”

EARLIER: James Gunn scored four Stan Lees for the price of one.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director was behind the camera this summer when Lee shot his next set of Marvel Cinematic Universe cameos, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson said Friday.

“It’s a big deal for a 93-year-old man to go to a movie set and spend a day shooting,” Derrickson explained after a special screening of Doctor Strange at EW PopFest.

As a result, Lee packed his cameos into one afternoon. “James shot four cameos with Stan in one day,” Derrickson said, adding that Gunn made sure to check with the filmmaker to make sure he did the job right. “James was texting me the frame. Does this look right? Does this look good?

Derrickson said he didn’t actually meet Lee until the premiere of Doctor Strange, but the comic book legend did lend the film his stamp of approval beforehand. “I talked to him on the phone, and he grilled me pretty well,” Derrickson said. “By the end of the conversation, he was very happy.”

News that Lee shot his next four cameos was first revealed by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige last month. “He was unbelievable,” Feige said. “He was on fire. He came in, he sat here, he stood there, he stood in this window, and then he went home.”

Doctor Strange is out Nov. 4, and will be followed on the Marvel schedule by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok next year.
