Agents of SHIELD: Can the team work with Daisy and Ghost Rider?

Though Daisy reunited with Simmons last week for a one-off mission, the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent will fully suit up with the team during Tuesday’s episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The hunt for the Darkhold will lead Coulson (Clark Gregg) & Co. to the prison that houses Robbie Reyes’ uncle Eli Morrow (Jose Zuniga), but tensions run high with Daisy (Chloe Bennet) and Ghost Rider (Gabriel Luna) in tow.

“He has a lone wolf, vigilante style, so the idea that he would be in alignment or working with S.H.I.E.L.D. was a tough pill to swallow at first,” Luna tells EW. “We butt heads quite a bit. I don’t answer to anyone — well, I do answer to something, but not someone, and that something is a little more unforgiving.”

For Daisy, her reluctance comes from a more emotional place. In the wake of Lincoln’s death, Daisy has basically pushed everyone out of her life, believing that would keep her friends safe. “Daisy is back. [She] doesn’t seem too thrilled about it,” Gregg says. “It’s kind of torture for Coulson’s mentor/parental heart to have her there and yet still feeling so distant and that there’s so much damage for her and damage in their connection. And yet it’s a step up from having her out on the run at god knows what horrible goth concert.”

Though Coulson seemed to meet Daisy with a somewhat icy reception when the duo crossed paths at the fireworks store during last week’s episode, Gregg insists that wasn’t necessarily the case. “His heart dropped into his socks when he saw her, but he didn’t want to presume that she was ready to come back to more than that,” Gregg says. “I think the whole realm of emotions and loving somebody is very strange territory that he has largely avoided or had been robbed from him in his life, so he’s very cautious in terms of the way he acts with her. For my money, it’s largely out of respect for who she is and the pain that she’s going through.”

However, Mack (Henry Simmons) is still hurt over Daisy’s decision to push everyone away. “Daisy will always be his little sister, and he’s always going to welcome her back into the family, but those things take time,” Simmons says. That’s why Mack will find himself teamed up with Robbie during Tuesday’s outing. “Robbie and I go out and look for Eli,” Simmons says. “The way Mack feels about these powered people and the way he feels about Ghost Rider, that could lead to problems.”

Finding the Darkhold will prove even more troublesome. “This Darkhold is in play, which is very terrifying because it’s a legendary book within S.H.I.E.L.D. that’s thought to be more than a book,” Gregg teases. “At the same time, for Coulson, it’s starting to make some of the bizarre stuff that’s going on so far start to hint at what might be going on.”

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
