EARLIER: Over the months leading up to the February release of Deadpool, it seemed like Ryan Reynolds’ Merc With the Mouth was just about everywhere — from red band trailers to testicular cancer PSAs, spot-on parodies of rom-com movie posters, and even an emoji-fied billboard.
That hilarious (and, like Deadpool himself, often very meta) marketing has been nominated for a Clio Award for Best Integrated Campaign, and Reynolds has lent his voice to a “For Your Consideration”-style video outlining why it should win.
“I know right? Whose balls did I have to fondle to get nominated for my very own key art?” he asks in the clip. “I can’t tell you, but it rhymes with Pull-verine.”
Reynolds-as-Deadpool then outlines some of the steps the marketing team took to build excitement for the film, including giving Conan O’Brien a massage, announcing the film’s “hard R” rating, the “12 Days of Deadpool” leading up to a Christmas trailer debut, and all that tongue-in-cheek advertising.
And now, after that campaign and the film’s record-breaking box-office haul, Deadpool is ready to party. As he declares at the end of the video, “To celebrate, I’m touching myself tonight.”
