Doctor Strange: General Hospital awkwardly name-drops Marvel movie

Behold the mystic art of product placement

Posted on

Doctor Strange would seem to be right at home in a hospital setting — he is, after all, a former neurosurgeon. But résumés notwithstanding, a recent shout-out to the Sorcerer Supreme on the long-running ABC soap opera General Hospital struck some viewers as a bit, well, strange.

As highlighted by iO9, the Oct. 12 episode of General Hospital featured a scene in which characters Ned (Wally Kurth) and Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) conspicuously discussed Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange movie in the middle of a intimate chat.

“You know, Doctor Strange is about to hit theaters pretty soon,” Olivia says coyly.

“You may be surprised to hear this, but if I can’t see that movie with you, I won’t see it,” a smitten Ned replies. “It won’t be the same.”

Of course, it doesn’t take the Eye of Agamotto to see there might be some corporate synergy at play, as ABC and Marvel Studios are both owned by Disney.

Doctor Strange opens Nov. 4. Watch the General Hospital clip above.
