Phantasm and You comedy short offers gory guide to resurgent horror franchise

Posted on

You don’t need a crystal ball — or a lethal, flying, sphere — to know that a lot of horror fans are going to be watching a lot of Phantasm movies this week. As of Tuesday, a 4K restoration of writer-director Don Coscarelli’s original, 1978 chiller, now renamed Phantasm: Remastered, and the new, fifth film in the series, Phantasm: Ravager, are available to watch via VOD and Digital HD and both will arrive in cinemas this Friday. The other three Phantasm films — 1988’s Phantasm II, 1994’s Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead, and 1998’s Phantasm IV: Oblivion — are also available to view on digital HD and on demand.

“It’s a swan song to the series,” says franchise overlord Don Coscarelli of Phantasm: Ravager, which he cowrote with its director, David Hartman. “There’s some new iterations of those brain-shucking spheres and a lot of good stuff that the fans will enjoy. It ties up a lot of the storylines and answers some questions that fans have had.”

Should Phantasm virgins watch the previous four films before seeing Phantasm: Ravager? Ideally, yes. But if you don’t have time for six-odd hours of phantasmagorical, brain-drilling mayhem then you can also get up to speed by watching the funny — but educational! — guide to the Phantasm franchise, above.

You can see the trailers for Phantasm: Remastered and Phantasm: Ravager, below. Details of the theaters showing the movies can be found at the Phantasm: Ravager facebook page.
