Lin-Manuel Miranda & Black Thought freestyle rap on Tonight Show

The last time Lin-Manuel Miranda was on The Tonight Show, the Hamilton creator got into a freestyle battle with The Roots’ Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter so intense that even J.J. Abrams called it “maybe the best television I’ve seen in the last 10 years.” So when Miranda returned to the show on Tuesday night, it was only natural that he and Trotter would go for round 2.

Miranda was up first, and was given “robot,” “corn maze,” and “Harry Potter” as his words. Amazingly, Miranda didn’t even mention Harry Potter by name, instead making rhymes about specific elements of the franchise: “Oh yeah, I’m going above and beyond / I’m Sirius Black, I’ve got my magic wand / Oh yeah, there is nothing you could do to harm us / Avada Kedavra and yo, expelliarmus!”

Trotter responded with a slick freestyle of his own, incorporating “lumberjack” into a rap that also joked about Miranda’s name and Miranda rights.

“‘Sit it up and chop it down like a lumberjack.’ You’re the greatest alive,” Miranda said. “Why am I even here?”

For the second final round, Miranda had to rap about Election Day, and ended up endorsing Hillary Clinton in the same breath that he used “erection” for a rhyme: “So, um, I got an erection today / I can’t wait to choose my choice on Election Day! I’m with her.”
