Hugh Jackman: Logan release date confirmed

Logan is back for one last snikt.

On Wednesday, Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman revealed the first teaser poster and possible title for what will be his final stint as the iconic X-Men character following 16 years of films. “LOGAN,” wrote Jackman alongside a picture of the teaser artwork, which was emblazoned on the side of a building. The poster includes the name Logan as well, the official Wolverine 3 title.

As seen above, the poster features a tiny hand holding Wolverine’s clawed fist, which allowed room for a quick Twitter joke from Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds.

Both Jackman and producer Simon Kinberg have said that the third solo Wolverine film will be “very different in tone” from previous outings, almost like a Western. That could explain the holding-hands image, since a young child paired with a grizzled old fighter is a common trope in the genre. It is also the defining feature of Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima’s long-running manga Lone Wolf and Cub, which was a primary influence on Frank Miller (who illustrated the first solo Wolverine miniseries that served as the basis for 2013’s The Wolverine).

Calling the film Logan also jibes with rumors the final film will be based on Old Man Logan, the 2008 comic storyline featuring an old, washed-up Logan in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the Marvel Universe (the character has since appeared in the mainstream Marvel Universe as well). Those rumors have yet to be fully confirmed, but the poster does confirm the movie’s release date: March 3, 2017.

After Jackman’s tease, director James Mangold released a clear version of the poster and a page from the Logan script.
