Nicholas Hoult could be the latest to bring Nikola Tesla to life on screen.
The X-Men star is in final talks to join Benedict Cumberbatch (Thomas Edison) and Michael Shannon (George Westinghouse) in The Current War, EW has confirmed. The Weinstein Co. drama is directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, who helmed Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.
The Current War will detail the late 19th century power wars between Edison and Westinghouse, with the former favoring direct current and the latter advocating for alternating current. Tesla worked for Edison in the 1880s and eventually went on to work for Westinghouse and license patents to aid him in the AC side of the electric battle.
Hoult recently reprised his role as Hank McCoy and Beast in X-Men: Apocalypse last May. The 26-year-old English actor also is starring in the upcoming Iraq War biopic Sand Castle and as a young J.D. Salinger in Rebel in the Rye.
The Current War is based on Michael Mitnick’s script, which made the 2011 Black List of the best unproduced screenplays.
The Wrap first reported the casting.
