This Is Us isn’t just adding new blood to its cast — it’s adding True Blood.

Sam Trammell, an alum of the HBO vampire drama, has signed up for a recurring role on the new NBC dramedy, EW has learned.

He’ll play the role of Ben, the frontman of a popular blues/jazz band, and makes his first appearance later this year.

Trammell, who starred on the big screen in The Fault in Our Stars, played shapeshifting Sam on True Blood during its seven-season run. His TV guest credits also include House, Dexter, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Childrens Hospital.

This Is Us follows a group of thirtysomethings who, as you find out at the end of the pilot, don’t just share the same birthday; they’re all in the same family. The critically praised series from Crazy, Stupid, Love screenwriter Dan Fogelman — which debuted Sept. 20 and includes Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, and Sterling K. Brown in its cast — quickly emerged as one of the fall’s breakout shows and scored a full-season order before unveiling its second episode on Tuesday.

Speaking of which, you can read what Fogelman — as well as Moore and Ventimiglia — had to say about the big twist here and here.
