Though she’s the resident queen of breakup anthems, Adele wants you to know she’s actually not bothered by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s impending divorce.
On Thursday night, during the fourth of her six performances at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, the “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” performer clarified her recent comments about Pitt and Jolie’s highly-publicized breakup.
“I would like to say that I think it’s a bit sick that you’re reporting on an absolute joke,” Adele the crowd, claiming reports that she sincerely led the audience “in a group Brangelina breakup therapy session” were false.
She added: “I don’t care they broke up. I couldn’t give a f—ing sh–. They’re making out like I was heartbroken, like ‘Oh my God,’ I don’t care… I wish them both the best, but I don’t care. And, to be honest, I don’t think they really care about what you lot say. I think it’s ridiculous, with what’s going on in the world, that’s front page news? I mean, who’d have thought? It’s sick.”
Adele blamed her own comedic timing as the primary reason the bit might not have landed the way she intended.
“Maybe my delivery is not always spot on. I’m not an actually comedian so my timing isn’t always great,” she said. “I didn’t mean it literally. [To treat it] as if I went home crying that night about it is ridiculous.”
Instead, Adele told the audience she went home that night and enjoyed a cold beer and movie.
Last Tuesday, concertgoers reported Adele dedicated her performance, which she called “two hours of misery,” to the demise of Brangelina, with the singer saying she wanted to “address the elephant in the room” with regards to news of the Hollywood power couple’s divorce. Additionally, she reportedly called the couple’s separation “the end of an era.”
