Two well-known entertainment brands launched series adaptations on Friday night with very different results.
CBS’ MacGyver reboot of the 1980s action-hour classic got off to a very strong start in a tough time slot at 8 p.m., delivering 10.1 million viewers and a 1.7 rating among adults 18-49. That makes MacGyver the best CBS series debut in that time slot since 2012. MacGyver also easily ranked as the night’s highest-rated show.
On the other hand, Fox’s attempt to bring horror franchise The Exorcist to the small screen struggled out of the gate at 9 p.m. The Exorcist only possessed 2.9 million viewers and a 1.0 rating in the demo.
Also taking a surprisingly hard knock on Friday night: The return of ABC’s typically strong-ish lineup, with anchor reality show Shark Tank (4.9 million, 1.1) down 35 percent from last year’s opener.
Perhaps the most intriguing part of Friday’s lineup wasn’t any of the new programs, however, but rather the return of Hawaii Five-0 virtually resurrecting original series star Jack Lord for an uncanny valley cameo in the premiere. See our exclusive interview about that cameo here.
