Grace VanderWaal may have won season 11 of America’s Got Talent for her impeccable singing chops, but can she beat Jimmy Fallon with s’mores in the way?
The new recording artist visited The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Friday to perform a live rendition of her original song “Clay” and play a few games. The pair took on a singing challenge, or as VanderWaal suggested, “the chubby bunny singing challenge,” filling their cheeks with marshmallows before mimicking each track. The late-night host kicked things off with an attempt at Lady Gaga’s “Pokerface,” but his mimic face didn’t tip off the young artist on the answer. Thankfully, Fallon channeled his best Taylor Swift, who Simon Cowell compared the America’s Got Talent winner to, for “Shake It Off.”
Fallon’s final attempt highlighted the stark difference in age between the 12-year-old performer and former Saturday Night Live cast member. Pulling out his own Justin Timberlake impression, the 42-year-old host repeatedly imitated the iconic hand motions from N*Sync’s “Bye, Bye, Bye.” Spitting out his mouthful of mallows, Fallon revealed the track. “‘Bye, Bye, Bye’? What?” said VanderWaal. “I’m so old, I’m so old, I am so old!” joked Fallon after seeing the young artist was in the dark.
The game kept rolling forward though, with VanderWaal giving her own candy-driven take on Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” and Drake’s “Hotline Bling.”
