Add Stephen Colbert to the list of people disgusted by Monday night’s Donald Trump Jr. tweet comparing Syrian refugees to Skittles.
On Tuesday’s episode of The Late Show, Colbert blasted Trump Jr. or as he called him Donald Trump’s “oldest son and guy who promises you a great deal on a 2003 Suzuki Sidekick.”
The controversial image featured a bowl of Skittles and this commentary: “If I had a bowl of skittles and I told you just three would kill you. Would you take a handful? That’s our Syrian refugee problem.”
“That’s a powerful metaphor. It really makes me rethink my stance on eating Syrian refugees,” Colbert said. He then trashed the meme for its poor grammar and incorrect premise.
“Now, there are a couple of problems with this Skittles meme. First off, it reads, ‘If I had a bowl of Skittles and told you just three would kill you.’ Okay, that’s not right. As in: If you think that’s a complete sentence, you must have your head up your,” Colbert joked.
“Also, it turns out the math is wrong. He’s saying three out of a little bowl of refugees would kill you. But last week, the conservative Cato Institute did the math and found out the odds of an American being killed by a refugee in a terror attack is one in 3.64 billion. So that’s not three poison Skittles in a bowl; that’s three poison Skittles in one and a half Olympic-size swimming pools of Skittles,” he added.
Colbert then took aim at the “real problem with the graphic”: its disregard for human beings. “It compares refugees fleeing their war-torn countries with pieces of sugar,” Colbert said. “These are people who dream of living in a country where food is so plentiful we waste our candy on metaphors.”
The host then spoke directly to the camera to address Trump Jr., using candy props to help drive his point home. “Listen up, Airhead. Reducing political problems to candy is Nutrageous. Anyone with an ounce of Smarties is Snickering at you, because you are alienating a lot of Peeps. Where does it end? Do we keep out Swedish Fisherman, or gay couples like Mike & Ike. You’re just trying to Skor a cheap political Payday with this Whooper, Dum Dum.”
