Donald Trump: Samantha Bee pans NBC for coverage

TBS

Samantha Bee is taking aim at NBC for how it’s handled Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The host of TBS’s Full Frontal has previously taken aim at Matt Lauer for how he moderated NBC News’ Commander-in-Chief Forum and Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon for not asking Trump substantive questions during an appearance last week. During a conference call with reporters Wednesday, Bee refocused her critique for the network.

“It’s not really a Jimmy thing. For me, it was more of an NBC thing,” Bee, per The Hollywood Reporter, said. “I’m just tired of having people on shows for great ratings just because you want and need great ratings. I’m tired of the whole process. I think it just needed to be called out. I just feel like they’ve allowed him to amplify his message in a way that feels so safe and comfortable, for so long.”

Some on social media criticized Lauer for being softer on Trump compared to how he handled his opponent, Hillary Clinton. Meanwhile, Bee went after NBC, after Trump’s Fallon spot, for putting the former host of The Apprentice on its late-night comedy programs: “To their credit, NBC did sever ties with Trump after he called Mexicans rapists — if by ‘severing ties’ you mean ‘inviting him on their flagship comedy programs to show millions of Americans what a fun guy he is,'” Bee incised.

“Even when The Apprentice was on, he was totally engaged with all of that birther nonsense, which to me was the most thinly veiled of thinly veiled racism,” Bee said in her Wednesday call. “And that was a really long time ago, and it’s only grown and grown — until he finally put the issue to bed. He said Mexicans are rapists and then they had him on [Saturday Night Live]. I’m just tired of it. I’m tired of the enabling a person to look like just this guy who likes to have fun.”

Full Frontal usually airs Mondays at 10:30 p.m. ET on TBS, but will air Wednesday to account for the first presidential debate, hosted by Lester Holt of NBC.
