Like so many characters on The Blacklist, Ryan Eggold’s Tom Keen is a man of multiple identities: orphan, petty criminal, assassin, spy, teacher. But as the NBC thriller nears its season 4 return, it’s Tom’s newfound role as a family man that supersedes all the others.
In a recent video interview with EW, Eggold discussed Tom’s drive to reunite with wife Liz (Megan Boone) and infant daughter Agnes after they were taken from him in the season 3 finale.
“I think Tom Keen is willing to go to just about any length to get back to Liz,” the actor said, “and especially to get to his daughter, who was also taken. He obviously loves Liz and was willing to go through faking her death and all these things to try to get freedom, to try to achieve their dream of living on an island somewhere.”
Eggold continued, “Now he’s discovering what it means to be a father. He’s a killer in many ways who’s turned off a lot of those aspects of himself, and now has this tiny, adorable little baby girl, which is awakening things in him. Or just teaching him what it means, maybe, to be human. So I think he’s learning to care like he never has before.”
Watch the video above for more from Eggold, including his thoughts on whether Tom is fit to be a father, what his dynamic with Red (James Spader) will be like in season 4, and how he’ll factor into the upcoming Blacklist spin-off, Redemption.
The Blacklist returns Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
