Early Tuesday morning we finally got our first real look at Passengers, the much-anticipated sci-fi adventure/love story co-starring Hollywood’s biggest and most likeable stars, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt.
And what a sight it is! There’s Michael Sheen as a dapper bartender robot, and a spaceship that looks more like a luxury cruise ship where, apparently, Lawrence can find the perfect little black dress for a date with Pratt. (And the chemistry between the costars is palpable even in this two-and-a-half-minute trailer.)
“It’s just one of those stories that really grabs you,” says director Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game). “The script was so smart and funny and clever and it was such a page turner, I couldn’t put it down.”
Indeed the script has been enthralling Hollywood since it was included on the 2007 Black List, the annual list of the most liked and still unproduced screenplays. “It’s perfection,” Lawrence says. “After reading it I thought I can’t not do this movie because it is so good.” (Seconds Pratt, “I just thought if this movie gets made with the two of us, with this story and with this director and we can execute this well, I really think it’s going to be one of the greatest, most original and compelling epic movies I’ve seen…maybe ever!”)
Though much of the plot twists are being closely guarded, we know the action takes place on the luxury spaceship seen here in the trailer. Jim (Pratt) and Aurora (Lawrence) are en route, with 5,000 others, to a new colony when they’re awakened out of suspended animation too early. Judging from this new footage, it looks like they won’t have a ton of time for drinks at the bar (poor Robot Sheen!) as their ship appears to be going through some catastrophic malfunction.
Says Tyldum, “Every generation has a big love story — I feel like this is it.”
Passengers arrives in theaters Dec. 21. See two new photos from the film below.
