The end of Furious 7 served as a fitting tribute and goodbye to Paul Walker and his character Brian O’Conner after the actor’s tragic death in November 2013, but his brothers say we might not have seen the last of O’Conner.
In an interview with ET, Caleb and Cody Walker, who helped stand in for their brother to finish Furious 7, said that there is the possibility that his character could make an appearance down the road in the franchise.
“I had a phone call with Vin [Diesel] for about an hour and we really discussed this a while back. He wanted [our] blessing,” shared Caleb. He continued that Diesel, who he called the “godfather” of the franchise, asked if and when the brothers thought it “would be acceptable to maybe bring Paul’s character back… to really kind of let his fans know he’s still out there.”
Cody added about the possibility of another appearance for the character, “Universal wants to make sure to be respectful of Paul and his image too, and his family.”
After Paul died during a break from filming Furious 7, director James Wan and Universal had to find a way to finish the film without one of their most important stars. This led to sending the character off into retirement and completing his remaining scenes through CGI and stand-ins, including Caleb and Cody. Helping finish their brother’s final film was an experience that they said helped them grieve.
“We got to understand more about Paul, and what he was all about,” said Caleb. “We had to share Paul with a lot of people, in a weird way. He was gone a lot, he was filming, so we missed him. Sometimes at the holidays he wasn’t always there, you know? He tried. We’d see him on set, we visited a few times, but to kind of get that closure, and understanding [of] Paul was really special.”
Fast 8, which the brothers didn’t indicate Paul’s character would appear in, races into theaters on April 14, 2017.
