Gotham: What you need to know before season 3 premieres

Gotham City is going mad in season 3. That is to say, it’s going to be even crazier than it has been for the past two seasons. But before you find yourself in the middle of the chaos, here’s everything you need to know ahead of the season 3 premiere.

Where we left off: A literal busload of monsters from Indian Hill was released on the city, including a more-powerful-than-ever Fish Mooney. Also released: A Bruce Wayne doppelganger. As for Gordon, he skipped town to try to find (and win back) Lee.

What we know about season 3: Not only will the Court of Owls become a more prominent aspect of Gotham, but considering that the tagline for the season is “Mad City,” it’s safe to say that the Mad Hatter will also make his presence known. As for returning faces, Fish Mooney is back with a vengeance, which is bad news for Penguin — who’s running for Mayor —and Jerome will also make his return (despite the fact that he died in season 2?). But perhaps the worst news of all? When the show picks up, Jim Gordon is no longer a member of the GCPD.

The new faces: In terms of casting, the show has added Jamie Chung as Valerie Vale, James Carpinello as Mario Falcone, Benedict Samuel as Mad Hatter, Naian Gonzalez Norvind as Alice Tech (the Hatter’s younger sister), and Maggie Geha as an adult Poison Ivy.

Gotham returns Monday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
