Denzel Washington has responded to the so-called “Uncle Denzel” meme — and he’s not a fan.
The meme was born after a less-than-flattering photograph of Washington was taken at the historic Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao boxing bout in May 2015. In the pic, the Oscar-winner sports a ballcap and a mustache (grown for his Magnificent Seven role). The meme typically features the photo along with a caption befitting a corny, out-of-touch fatherly figure.
While Washington was promoting The Magnificent Seven, Global Grind asked him for his thoughts on being meme-ified. “If I had my wallet, I’d show it to you,” he said. “Because they didn’t know what I was doing. They don’t need to know.”
“Those who can, do. Those who can’t, talk about those who can,” he continued. “Are you just one that sits on the sideline to talk about other people, or can you step up?”
See the interview below. The Magnificent Seven — starring Chris Pratt and directed by Training Day‘s Antoine Fuqua — opens Sept. 23.
