The iconic Golden Girls theme song celebrates friendship — specifically, the kind of friend who has “traveled down the road and back again.” The theme song itself, “Thank You For Being a Friend,” has traveled down its own long and winding road, one that has now led to St. Vincent’s funereal dirge remix.

The song was written by Andrew Gold but performed most famously by Cindy Fee for the show’s version. It has since been covered every which way, from death metal to ska. St. Vincent’s is unlike any other, though: The rocker stripped away all vocals and lyrics, leaving only the hollow, ethereal sound of loving a friend after they’re gone, or mourning a friendship withered by neglect.
